Expertise is competence related to a specific topic, line of work or problem area. Contrary to professional skills, expertise is not connected to a specific profession but more commonly described as a way of working.
Different definitions of expertise share a common understanding of expertise being generated through the interplay between theoretical, experiential and self-regulatory
knowledge. Research on expertise has long traditions ranging from the examination of an individual’s knowledge and skills acquisition to the perspectives of constructing shared, collective expertise. Knowledge assimilation and creation, as well as participation, are essential in becoming an expert. Continuous learning and development of expertise are typical of experts.
